Summary
This 96-page guide contains guidelines designed to be a comprehensive resource specifically addressing the development and implementation of communication for issues related to gender-based violence. It addresses core concepts such as understanding your intended audience and how to approach monitoring and evaluation. The guidelines are a tool for those involved in work against gender–based violence. They include additional resources to assist readers in developing their communication when more detail or examples are required.

The guidelines were produced after a study of communications in South Africa and Namibia, including media campaigns, and of the many resources that already exist. In order to meet some of the needs identified through these studies, the guidelines include:

  • a 10 step plan to follow for producing a communication strategy;
  • how to go about researching intended audiences to produce the right message;
  • understanding behavioural change and its relation to the intended audience; and
  • monitoring and evaluation planning and techniques appropriate to gender-focused communications.
